Being in hospital can be scary for anyone but being a child it can be hard, especially when they are away from home and their usual surroundings and are used to running around, riding their bike, sitting on the swing or playing with siblings and friends.
We want to try and allay those fears and make our youngest patients feel ‘normal’. Yes, they are in hospital because they are unwell, but being able to go outside in a safe space is a very important part of their rehabilitation.
Play is essential for improving the wellbeing of children and reduces anxiety, fear and stress associated with being in hospital. Play can reduce a child’s feeling of pain associated with hospital treatment. When play and distraction are incorporated into hospital treatment, it can sometimes reduce the need for sedation allowing clinicians to carry out investigations in a calm manner. Outdoor play gives children a break from devices.
We want to create an outdoor space that children are able to express themselves through play, spending time with family making music, watching a movie or even doing some arts and craft work with the play team.
